I think the Censorship vs. Censureship group should write about Censureship of extreme political views in a podcast that fits the style of Shock-Jocks like Rush Limbaugh. I think this would be very engaging to listen to, and the style of the podcast would really free up the conversation, allowing you to say whatever you wanted. Which is the whole point right? You could take on views from anywhere on the political spectrum, discuss them, and weigh pros and cons. You could also take just one divisive issue, like Abortion or the PATRIOT Act, and discuss where you personally stand, or take on where some extreme groups stand. It could be extremely interesting, and I know I would love to hear it.

This is a "True Summary":
The Article "On Equal Pay Day, Key Facts About the Gender Pay Gap" by Eileen Patten, was published on the Pew Research Center's website. It begins with a video that goes throughout the article almost verbatim. It then goes into what "Equal Pay Day" is: The date that symbolizes how far into the year a woman has to work to get the same amount of money that a man does in the previous year. It then cites the White House statistic that a woman earns 77% of what a man does, but then states their own findings: that women earn 84% of what men earn. Then the article delves into why the Gender Pay Gap still exists after all these years. They give many reasons that impact women's earnings in comparison to men. The reason they cite is that women are far more likely to take time off of work, or even quit, because of children or other family members. It also states that women tend to go into lower paying fields, but that this trend is slowing. For my second unessay, I'm considering giving a speech. It will probably come with a PowerPoint presentation. According to the American Management Association the principles of effective public speaking are:

Dear Class,
Thank you for an amazing first semester of college. By working with all of you I have become more open to the view that others hold much different perspectives in life than I do and have had very different experiences than I have had or will have. I thank you all for helping me with that because I know it will help my writing in the future by allowing me to take more time to think of what other people may think about the topic and try to look at the topic from different angles than I would have come up with on my own. I enjoyed hearing what everyone did their second unessay on, I thought some of the topics chosen were very interesting and things I had not really known about much before hearing a quick preview of. To my forum group, I enjoyed working with you guys a ton and I hope that I'll get the opportunities to work with you guys in future classes. You all brought something unique to the group, that statement is also applicable to the class as a whole but those in my forum group I got to spend more time with outside of class. I enjoyed seeing the different ways people in the class thought through class discussions. Hope you all have a great break and I hope to see you all around campus, Bennett Gagnon Dear my fellow Koalas,
Thank you for being a part of this English 101 class this semester. I truly enjoyed this class, my first English class that I actually didn't dread going to. This is because you guys are awesome! We had so many amazing discussions, although we would quite often get off topic, but we would always manage to get back on topic and get the job done. We were an incredibly inclusive class, bringing in all kinds of different viewpoints that I'd never thought of before. These discussions really got me thinking outside the box. I got to see life from many different perspectives other than my own. People consist of their experiences, and sharing these experiences is incredibly important for building friendships in life. I realized that our differences are what make us stronger people. I've also learned that I am more similar to this class than I might have thought. I am not the only Star Trek nerd. I am not the only one who has recently lost a friend to suicide. I am not the only Cross Country runner. Similarities bring people together, but differences keep people together. I've come to realize that researching doesn't have to mean purely through internet searches and scouring through books. Just talking to people to see their point of view can be considered research. For some of my research, in this class and others, I conducted interviews to see others' thoughts and opinions on a variety of topics. I also learned in this class that writing does not have to be formal to be a strong argument. Almost every single blog post that I've written was done informally, and both my unessays were written informally. I found that when I write informally, it is easier for me to connect to my audience, in this case, you guys. Writing is not evil. Writing classes are not fiery burning pits to run away from. Writing is an excellent form of communication that can be done by anybody, anywhere. I used to absolutely loathe any assignment that required more than a paragraph of writing, but that is no longer true. I am no longer afraid. So thank you, thank you. You made a difference, and for that, I am incredibly grateful. Please say hello if you see me on campus, I would love to chat about anything at all. Your friend, Michaela Bruns Dear Class,
Thank you so much for being a great class. I loved coming into class on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and being able to have a great discussion with all you wonderful people. I feel like this class was the only class this year where I actually became friends with everyone in it rather than a group of strangers that got together to learn material. I could always go up to one of you and talk to you if I saw you around campus. I loved the discussions we had in class. It was great how we were able to take a variety of topics and have a real honest discussion about them. I liked how even though we all had differing opinions and views on the topics, we were all able to remain civil and respectful. I know I got a lot out of the discussions and I am sure everyone else did too. I also liked the unessays and forum topics. It was great getting to research a topic I was interested in and become more knowledgeable about it. In other classes it seemed that I had to pick a topic I didn't particularly like, but in this class I was able to research what I was interested in and learn more about it. Overall it was a great class and I am very glad I was placed in it Have a great Christmas break! Reed Ocheltree Dear Class,
Throughout this semester the amount of interclass collaboration and discussion was something very new to me. In High School we never had discussions like this especially where the students ran it instead of the teacher. This new way I found was very beneficial and helped me provoke thoughts I never really considered. It was nice because you get to listen to all sides of argument, or here how certain people relate personally to whatever the topic is. When we had discussions after each of the presentations it was really cool to see what everyone’s sides were on all of these topics that affect us all personally. I also enjoyed all of the blog posts we were able to do and how we were able to read and comment on our fellow classmates posts. Many times I looked at other students blog posts if I was looking for new styles of writing. I would overall say that throughout this semester one of the biggest things that helped turn me into the writer I am today was the class and all the new influences I learned from them. Thank you, Phil Meyers Dear Class,
Thank you, thank you, a million times thank you. Thank you for listening intently to my bizarre dreams. It’s not often that anyone ever comes close to understanding what my subconscious cooks up; so I’d like to acknowledge that some of you even tried. Thank you for always showing up ten minutes early. Yes, I know it’s the lunch period for most people, but it always seems to make my day that we get to have a few nice conversations before class starts (and if we’re lucky, the laughter spills over into the class period). Thank you for your humor. You all were side-splittingly hilarious on your worst days and (somehow) even more entertaining on your best. And it wasn’t like anyone stood out, either. By some grace from above, the second anyone walked into that room it was like they could say no wrong. On a related note, thank you for being so understanding. Never have I ever felt more comfortable in a classroom setting than at 1:10 on Monday, Wednesday, and so many Fridays. Whatever differences, feelings, or backgrounds we came from before, it was like we could all set them aside when we arrived. And whether or not we wanted to be there or not, we forgot about it because all of us understood the mutual respect we had for our classmates. Thank you for all your quirks! My goodness, I don’t think I’ve ever met a more interesting group of people in my life! We were athletes, theatre folk, singers, dancers, math whizzes, artists, and just plain regular Joes. We were quiet, we were LOUD (I might had added to that a little), some of us wore shoes, some of us didn’t. Bennett, never change. Thank you for your passion, thank you for your enthusiasm. We had some really meaningful conversations this semester. You all have set a very, very powerful precedent for class discussions in college. Your opinions, considerations, and thoughts will continue to inspire me both during my time here and for the time to come. And I know I’ve said it before but I seriously can’t say it enough: Thank you. Sincerely yours, Emma Delucchi Dear Class,
I am so grateful that I got to be apart of such an amazing class, thank you so much! Honestly in the past I did not enjoy English classes that much, although this semester has changed my view about writing and this class has been one of my favorites this semester! It has been great seeing everyone grow as a writer, and learning about the writing process through my peers. Being able to read everyone’s blogs has exposed me to many different kinds of writing. I loved doing to forum projects, since during this project my peers taught me so much about the research process. Overall everyone in this class has really pushed me to explore my creativity and break away from the classic five paragraph essay. Thank you so much! Mallika Sharabu Dear class,
Thank you. All of you. This has definitely been one of my favorite classes this semester. You were all so friendly and welcoming from day one. I definitely grew a lot as a writer with you guys in this class. I used to be a really rigid writer and I hated it since all I wrote was essays for school. But this class helped me to grow as a writer and taught me how to write more in a more captivating and interesting way. It was also really awesome to see everyone else grow as writers in this class--it let me break out of my "shell" in writing as I grew alongside you guys. I learned a lot from you guys about how to write and present in a more effective way. Your guys' creativity is inspiring. In the past, group projects were also something that I'd always struggled with in classes. However, I can genuinely say that I have thoroughly enjoyed working with and getting to know all of you, especially in groups. Thank you for being an incredible class. Courtney Shih |
